Ah belt up!: The National Bus and Rail Union is threatening to take industrial action unless the school bus fleet is urgently upgraded. The NBRU's warning comes following another incident involving a Bus Eireann school bus in Co Westmeath earlier today. The bus was taken out of service after the driver detected smoke coming from the brakes.

Hush hush, bang bang: Amnesty International tonight called for an independent inquiry into the killing of two armed robbers in a quiet Irish village as Bertie Ahern backed the gardai involved. Mr Ahern said the public had been calling for stronger law enforcement and should not go weak-kneed when it is delivered.
