SUBJECT: Rebel Memorial is now Shooter's Gallery
Dear Sir/Madam
Following on from the recent announcement that the Dublin Corporation intends to relocate the colloquial yet comely 'Floozy in the Jacuzzi' statue and fountain, formerly of O’Connell Street, to the Croppy Acre near Collins Barracks, callers on to radio (Hivemind, RTE Radio 1) are concerned that this lewd statue will 'insult the memory of the brave freedom fighters who are buried there'.
Museum, Luas and Memorial, in that order |
As you are no doubt aware, some 10,000 "Croppy Boy" rebels from the ill-feted 1798 rebellion who were executed at mass by the Crown forces in revengeful slaughter lie unaccounted for in mass graves in this bully's acre area adjoining the Collins Barracks, formerly the Royal Barracks, now the national museum for the decorative arts, in historical terms, the first barracks the bollox ever built etc, etc.
"The Croppies Acre Memorial Park was unveiled by The Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern TD on 22 November 1998" |
Your readers may be aware of a monument already emplaced in this hallowed ground, opened in 1998 by the present Taoiseach of the Irish people, no less a personage than Bartholemew Himself Ahern.
Now, recently today, whilst taking photos of this monument, innocently, through the lens of my camera, I was shocked and surprised to notice the ground is coated in discarded spikes and syringes, methadone capsules and all other accouterments of addiction.
They were even floating on the memorial pond like the proverbial tide of scum, literally.
Having walked into the middle of the monument area oblivious to this, I then realised that the ground my feet were on was carpeted by sharps.
Being that I was wearing sandals because of the first sunny day of the year, and I couldn't be any closer to standing on them, my first thought was of course was 'What if one of these used needles sticks in my foot?!'
Needles to say, I backed away gently being very careful so as not to get AIDS.
I would like to point out to the you're readers and the Denizens of Dublin that if they wish to relocate the Anna Livia goddess statue formerly of O'Connell St to where the junk-uzzi is now, they will have the much larger scale problem than burger cartons of naked heroin addicts frolicking in the water feature at all hours injecting themselves and others in places or places unknown.
Obviously as you can agree, the memory of the dead rebels is being sorely densicrated by large scale recreational drug taking in the area, sponsored by the State health services' treatment programmes etc

PS: I have written to Dublin County Council asking them at their next council meeting to consider to table a proposal to change the name of the "Croppies Acre" and rename it the "Poppy Acre" during their revamp, in honor of the local drug dependents and their drug lords in the HSE.
